After Venom and Morbius, Sony’s next Marvel hero will be El Muerto

The rapper Bad Bunny will embody this wrestler who faces Spider-Man in the comics.

From the box of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony multiplies the announcements of spin-offs. After Venom and Morbius, played respectively by Tom Hardy and Jared Leto, the studio will offer solo films to three superheroes/super-villains unknown to the general public: Kraven the Hunter will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Madame Web will be played by Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of grey) and El Muerto will be performed by Bad Bunny.

Sony took advantage of CinemaCon to announce the launch of this film project devoted for the first time to a Latino hero. Real name Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, El Muerto is a wrestler who gets superpowers as soon as he puts on his mask. “lucha libre”, a style of Mexican wrestling. Created by the author Peter David and the cartoonist Roger Cruz, he appeared very recently in the comics, precisely in the n°6 of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manin 2019. During his adventures, he almost unmasked Spider-Man during a fight.

To play him, producer Amy Pascal chose Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, a Puerto Rican rapper better known as Bad Bunny. Having collaborated with Drake or Cardi B., the latter is a big wrestling fan: he attended several WWE matches, participated in fights himself and said he was delighted at the idea of ​​interpreting a such a character for Sony: “Bringing El Muerto back to life is just amazing! I love wrestling, I’m a wrestler myself…”, he reacted during this important event for American film studios. This won’t be his big-screen debut, as he recently appeared in Fast & Furious 9and that it will soon be on the bill of Bullet Train, by David Leitch, alongside Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock. He also starred in the final season of Narcos: Mexico.

For the moment, El Muerto has no appointed director. Sony has however already blocked an American release date for this film: January 12, 2024.
