Annecy 2022: everything we learned about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man 2099, Gwen, a Weird Vulture, the villain The Spot, Spider-Woman… The Sony Animation film was the event of this beginning of the festival.

After the animated film Oscar, where can we go? But even further into the Spider-Verse, of course! Sony Animation took advantage of the first day of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to present never-before-seen images from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Following Spider-Man: Next Generation, therefore) which will be released in the summer of 2023. On stage, the vice-president of production of the studio, Kevin Noel, and the three new directors took turns: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin Thompson. Just before, screenwriters and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who could not make the trip, spoke to the public in Annecy through a video.

Before going into the hard part, know that between Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, we will discover in all more than 240 characters. Nothing to get bored of, then. Back on everything we learned during this obviously crazy presentation.

The new villain: The Spot

Surprise: the bad guy of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a villain not frankly identified by the general public. Appearing for the first time in the comics in 1984, The Spot has his body covered with sorts of ink stains (” alive ”) which are all interdimensional portals. He is also able to make these portals appear at will, and can thus transport objects and people as he sees fit… According to the directors, he will be a particularly formidable enemy. The character will be voiced by Jason Schwartzman.

Spider-Man 2099 and Jessica Drew team up

Preview at the end of new generation, Spider-Man 2099 will be visibly central to the plot. A ” badass fighter as the reals describe it, and a ” scientist from the future who learned to travel between dimensions “. Visually, the style of its creator, comic book artist Rick Leonardi, is perfectly transcribed on the screen. Blessed with claws, laser webs, superhuman strength, and a wingsuit that allows him to fly, Miguel O’Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac!) also teams up with Jessica Drew (Issa Rae), aka the Spider- Original Woman who uses her motorcycle in combat. Both travel regularly through the multiverse (to try to repair it?): in a scene shown in Annecy, we see them fighting against an anachronistically drawn Vulture (in the style of the Vitruvian Man) in the middle of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The action sequences, though not yet finished, are mouth watering.

Gwen is back

Already (re) seen in the film’s teaser, Gwen Stacy is making her comeback in this sequel and the young woman will have to deal with her father, George Stacy (voiced by Shea Whigham), a cop who follows the rules to the letter , and convinced that Spider-Gwen killed the Peter Parker of their universe. Gwen hides her dual identity as best she can but when she finds herself at the Guggenheim with Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Woman, the confrontation with her father is inevitable… We won’t say more. On the animation side, the directors chose to take up the style of the comics Spider Gwen by simulating a kind of quite stunning watercolor painting, which reflects the character’s feelings in real time. ” Never seen sums up Justin Thompson.

Miles Morales grew up

Now 15 years old He thinks he is already an adult “), Miles Morales has obviously gained in size and his physique has become more refined. The directors promise that his movements will change accordingly. In one scene, we discover him with his parents and a guidance counsellor. Miles is interested in quantum physics and seems particularly good at it. But his duty as a superhero constantly catches up with him, and he is even forced to leave the meeting to go and take care of a villain who is screwing up the area in town. Her mother seems much more alert than Aunt May about these sudden disappearances, and her secret identity may not last long… In addition, Kemp Powers wants to reassure fans of the character, who will not be drowned among the others: ” Never lose sight of what people loved about the first movie: Miles Morales “. Amen.
