Benedict Cumberbatch regrets his non-binary role in Zoolander 2

“There was a lot of controversy surrounding the role, which is understandable today…”

The filmography of Benedict Cumberbatch is vast. Rich. Heterogeneous. And Penélope Cruz reminded him, during a cross interview for Variety, that they had collaborated together on screen in Ben Stiller’s comedy Zoolander 2. A critical and public flop, which also earned the English actor bad buzz for his incarnation of a non-binary character, a strange model at the time denounced by LGBTQ activists, who had called for a boycott and launched a protest petition with 25,000 signatures:

“There was a lot of controversy surrounding the role, which is understandable today,” comment Benedict Cumberbatch in the interview. “Besides, these days, my role would never be played by anyone other than a trans actor. Between the lines, we therefore understand that Benedict Cumberbacht regrets a posteriori having played this role, even Benedict Cumberbacht regret”even if I remain delighted to have been able to work with Ben [Stiller] and owen [Wilson] !”
