The Golden Bear goes to the Spanish film Alcarràs by Carla Simón.
The 72nd edition of the Berlinale has just delivered its verdict. And the German festival honored French cinema, since Claire Dennis was honored with a Silver Bear, for Best Direction, for her film With love and determination.
A passionate story that brings together Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon, in the shoes of a Parisian couple who are torn apart, when past desires resurface. A milestone victory in the career of Claire Denis who had not been so honored at a festival since her Grand Jury Prize for Nenette and Boniin 1996 in Locarno.
And women have largely dominated this 2022 list of the Berlinale since she is a Spanish director, Carla Simonwho leaves with the Golden Bear, for his second feature film, Alcarras. A moving drama about a Catalan farming family facing eviction, carried by an entirely unprofessional cast. Alcarras was the favorite. It was unanimous when it was screened and therefore also greatly moved the jury chaired by M. Night Shyamalan.
Note that with this Golden Bear for Simón (for Alcarras), added to the Golden Lion of Venice for Audrey Diwan (for The Event), and the Palme d’Or for Julia Ducournau at Cannes (for Titanium), it is the first time in history that the three most prestigious awards on the international festival circuit are all held by women.
With love and determination and Alcarras do not yet have a release date in France.
