Bright 2, with Will Smith, canceled by Netflix

The sequel to the hit 2017 film will ultimately not see the light of day.

It was one of Netflix’s first blockbusters: in 2017, Will Smith wore Bright, fantasy action thriller, on the streaming platform. With little critical backing, the film still achieved good ratings, becoming one of the network’s biggest hits at the time.

In the aftermath, Bright 2 was put on track, before being delayed by COVID. Today, Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw announces that Netflix has canceled the sequel. Will Smith will therefore not reprise the role of Daryl Ward, an LAPD inspector in a world where humans coexist with a number of mystical creatures.

Of course, some might think that the streaming giant has decided to cut Bright 2 after the Oscars slap. But Bloomberg specifies that the cancellation of Bright 2 is “unrelated” to the slap in the face to Chris Rock by Will Smith.

On the other hand, it is indeed at the origin of a decision by National Geographic which chose to postpone Pole to Polea nature documentary in the wake of Welcome to Earth, in which Smith was to go on an adventure to visit both the South Pole and the North Pole. Production was supposed to start in three weeks, but it will ultimately wait until the fall.
