After The Hollywood Reporterit’s the turn of variety to wonder about the upcoming selection of the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Taking place from May 17 to May 28, the 2022 edition of Cannes will not be officially detailed until the end of April. In the meantime, sources have told variety that the Festival could be chaired by a woman, and that several feature films were already approached for selection in competition.

Cannes 2022: 20 films that could be screened at the festival

Thus, it seems that Marion Cotillard or Penelope Cruz are considered to chair the jury for the 2022 edition. For this, their upcoming films would have to be selected out of competition, Cotillard playing in Brother and sister by Arnaud Desplechin and Cruz in The immensity by Emanuele Crialese.

In parallel, variety already draws up a list of films which could be presented at Cannes out of competition. And at the top of the list, we find Top Gun: Maverickjudged as a “planetary blockbuster” by Thierry Fremeaux. If he found himself projected on the Croisette, this new part of the Top Gun saga could create the event, with the arrival of Tom Cruise on the red carpet. George Miller could also walk the steps of the Palais des Festivals with his new film, Three Thousand Years of Longing, the opportunity for Tilda Swinton to return to Cannes after her performances last year with Wes Anderson and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

As the THRVariety suggests that the new Baz Luhrmann, Elvis, is also tipped to debut at Cannes out of competition, just like Lightyear Pixar studios. The Dardenne Brothers, twice winners of the Palme d’Or, could return to competition with their new film Tori and Lokita. Ttriangle of Sadness is also envisaged, four years after the Palme de The Square for director Ruben Östlund. Finally, the selection of Rodeo, directed by Lola Quivoron, would offer the filmmaker international exposure for her film, but also the opportunity for the Cannes Film Festival to highlight a promising new director.
