CODA revived for the Oscars? Everything will be decided between The Power of the Dog and the remake of The Aries Family

Jane Campion, on the other hand, remains the favorite for the best director.

After the triumphant weekend of The Power of the dog, awarded at the BAFTA, the DGA Awards and the Critics Choice Awards last week, the matter seemed to be settled. Jane Campion’s feature film was going to win at the Oscars, which will be held on the night of March 27 in Los Angeles, with a probable double best film and best director. Except that…

The outsider CODA has just got back into the race, winning the PGA Award for Best Film on Saturday (awarded by the producers’ union), and Sunday the WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (awarded by the screenwriters’ union). Already left winner of the SAG Awards (prize of the actors’ union), the remake of The Aries Family has therefore won three of the four “guild awards”, minor prizes for the general public but often indicators of how members of the Academy will vote.

As reminded Deadline, in the past 27 years (when the SAG Awards were established) all winners of the prestigious Best Picture Oscar have previously won at least one of these four awards. This would negate the chances of Belfast, which was nevertheless presented as the favorite at the start of the awards season. So it’s an Apple duel (CODA) vs Netflix (The Power of the Dog) which is taking shape, even if we are never safe from a surprise and an anti-streamers vote which would benefit Kenneth Branagh’s film.

As for the Oscar for best director, Jane Campion remains the best placed (Sian Heder, the director of CODAis not named), with Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) in ambush.

Finally, the Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay could go to CODA and Don’t Look Up!who won at the WGA Awards.
