The Italian actor died in Rome from a long illness, his family announced on Tuesday (September 7th). He had notably interpreted Guy, in love with Catherine Deneuve in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg.
According to French film, Italian Francesco “Nino” Castelnuovo died at his home in Rome on September 6, 2021 at the age of 84. The actor, who became famous in France thanks to Jacques Demy, has held nearly fifty roles in the cinema, having started his career in 1957 after having followed the professions. Sometimes a mechanic, sometimes a real estate agent or a dancer, it is ultimately to the cinema screen that he remains faithful.
Became popular thanks to a soap opera, as recalled Franceinfo, he got his first major role in 1960 in Rocco and his brothers, alongside Luchino Visconti, Alain Delon, Annie Girardot and Claudia Cardinale.
Passed in front of the camera of Jacques Demy, for whom he plays Guy opposite Catherine Deneuve in Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Palme d’Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival but which was not very successful beyond the Alps, he continued his career with great directors such as Agnès Varda, Vittorio de Sica or Jean-Luc Godard. He finally left the cinema in 2016 with The Legacy Run scored by Massimiliano Mazza.
