Since the emergence of streaming platforms, DVD and Blu-ray sales have fallen considerably, to the point where several experts believe that video in physical media could have the same future as vinyl. Thus, from a product intended for the general public, it could become a collector’s item for cinephiles.

How is the DVD and Blu-ray market doing?

At the end of the 90s, DVD appeared in France and quickly replaced VHS. 20 years later, the DVD seems to suffer the same fate as its predecessor. One might think that the disappearance of DVD is due to the arrival of a better quality disc: Blu-ray, but it is not. It is especially since the dematerialization of media and the appearance of video-on-demand platforms such as Netflix, Disney + or even Apple TV, which have created a new way of consuming films. DVD and Blu-ray sales have been falling inexorably for the past ten years, to the great regret of moviegoers. Considered by many to be too expensive, there is however the possibility of reselling and / or buying DVDs and Blu-rays on re-commerce sites such as Momox.

The collapse of the DVD and Blu-ray market

After the appearance of VHS, then DVD and Blu-ray, video on demand (VOD), which arrived on the market in 2010, became more popular, offering to rent the selections provided for a fixed period, more simple and more economical for the consumer. But since 2014 VOD is also on the downward slope. Indeed, SVOD (video on demand with subscription) platforms now offer access to a large catalog of videos (films, series, documentaries, etc.) available at home, at unbeatable prices. Since 2010, therefore, DVD and Blu-ray sales have plummeted and the turnover of French publishers has fallen from 1.38 billion euros in 2010 to 690 million euros in 2015. In 2019, the turnover business was 406 million euros. Such a fall, that that year, the giant Samsung announced to stop its production of Blu-ray and Blu-ray 4K ultra HD players to focus on dematerialization.

The advent of streaming platforms

At the end of 2019, at the beginning of 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brings the final blow to the physical support of the video. The fall accelerates and the market collapses. The confinements seem to have encouraged people to turn to SVOD platforms (Mycanal, HBO Max, Prime Video, etc.). An April 2020 study conducted by Hadopi confirms that 46% of French people had access to a paid video on demand subscription in March 2020. That is an increase of 10% in one year. According to data from the CNC (National Center for Cinema and Animated Image), video on demand represented 79% of the market in the first quarter of 2020. Why is SVOD increasingly attractive? Already by its simplicity, from his sofa, the user has access to a large number of videos of all kinds. In addition, it is the most economical solution. Indeed, the cost of a subscription to a platform of this kind is less than 10 € per month, while a VOD movie rented on a VOD site costs 4.99 € and a new Blu-ray. is offered around 20 € new.

DVD and Blu-ray, a market for moviegoers

While the general public seems to be turning their backs on DVD and Blu-ray, this is not the case with moviegoers, who are still very much attached to physical video media. Indeed, moviegoers know that there is not only one film on the cake, there are also long versions, cut scenes, alternatives, audio comments or even interviews for example. Objects of desire and collection, DVDs and Blu-rays have become a niche market which should continue to attract moviegoers, especially at reduced prices on re-commerce sites.
