You even have to go back to the Lion King, released in July 2019, to find better. (Source: Le Film Français)
Bringing together 476,494 spectators in 882 cinemas in France, Spider-Man: Homecoming starts strong in France! It is quite simply the best first day of a film released since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic: it doubles the 468,862 tickets sold by Fast & Furious 9 in July. The last time a blockbuster did better was in 2019, when The Lion King was seen by 630,478 curious people on the Wednesday it was released.
Within the saga Spiderman, Tom Holland offers his best score, well ahead of the 233,579 entries of Homecoming, and just ahead of the 453,503 of Far From Home, which accumulated respectively 2.3 and 3.2 million tickets in 2017 and 2019. This is not, however, the biggest start of the saga, the three opus of Sam Raimi carried by Tobey Maguire having made very strong between 2002 and 2007 by attracting in order of outputs 480,288, 502,494 and 804,345 curious at startup, then, 6.3, 5.2 and 6.3 million cumulatively.
Spider-Man: No Way Home, a last tour of the web [critique]
This excellent first day of No Way Home is of course explained by the popularity of superhero films, but also perhaps by Sony’s strategy of betting on a promotion “no spoiler” around this film, which pushes the public to rush into theaters as soon as it is released to check if the rumors are true: the three performers of Peter Parker are they gathered on the screen? Have characters really been deleted from the trailers to keep surprises? We will see in a few weeks whether the success is maintained over time or if most of the fans will have seen it from its first days in theaters. In any case, these nearly 500,000 cinema tickets sold in one day are reassuring as to the health of the sector, which has been greatly weakened in recent months. After long weeks of closing the rooms, then important sanitary protocols (spectator measurement, establishment of the sanitary pass …) and “traffic jams” new features once the cinemas reopen, box offices are generally weaker in 2021 than in previous years. Seeing a blockbuster achieve scores worthy of July 2019 indicates a strong recovery. It remains to be seen whether it will repeat itself on other expected films (such as Matrix Resurrections next week?) or if No Way Home will act as a special case …
Despite Kaamelott, the health pass undermines the French box office
Faced with this impressive start, the competitors are far behind. Mystery, an adventure film with Vincent Elbaz and Marie Gillain, is for example second with “only” 32,592 people gathered in front of 481 screens, and comedy My dearest children, carried by Josiane Balasko and Didier Bourdon, closed the podium thanks to 25,618 countermarks passed for 393 screens.
