Will the cult 1978 film lead to a TV franchise? Paramount seems determined to make the most of its musical license, to boost its Paramount + platform. A movie Summer Lovin ‘ recounting the meeting between Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), a young Australian on vacation in America, and Danny (John Travolta) is already in development, under the leadership of director Brett Haley.
And this “Grease Cinematic Universe” will expand with Rise of the Pink Ladies, a brand new officially ordered prequel series. Ten episodes for the streaming service that will tell the origin of the famous band of girls with pink jackets: Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty and Jan!
The story will unfold “four years before the events of the musical and will follow four high school outcasts who band together to trigger a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever“, according to the synopsis.
Rise of the Pink Ladies will therefore focus on entirely new characters and will be written by Annabel Oakes, who worked on Atypical for Netflix. She will be a showrunner.
