“We’re not going to reinvent the wheel,” says creator and director Miguel Sapochnik.
He is one of the main architects of the success of Game Of Thrones, at the time. Miguel Sapochnik directed some of the most successful episodes of the HBO series. And he will now be entirely in charge of House of the dragon, the recently filmed spin-off, of which he is a showrunner. In an interview given this week to Hollywood Reporter, he explains that the new series will be very close to the old one:
“We’re very respectful of what the original series is. It’s not something that’s been damaged. So we’re not going to reinvent the wheel.“Of course, Sapochnik promises that House of the dragon will have “nevertheless its own tone which will evolve and emerge as the series progresses. But first, it’s very important to pay tribute to the original series, which was quite revolutionary. We stand on the shoulders of Game Of Thrones and we do not forget that we are only here because there has been Game Of Thrones before. So the most important thing was to respect the original series as much as possible, trying to complement it rather than reinvent it. “
We therefore understand that the feeling, the imagery, the staging or the general atmosphere of House of the dragon will be in the continuity of Game Of Thrones. The director also admits that he uses “the same color palette”.

The hardest part will therefore be for the spin-off to detach itself from the parent company. Miguel Sapochnik knows it well and insists at the same time: “House of the dragon, it’s something else, and it has to give the feeling of something different. The team is different, the cast is different, the tone is different. Hopefully this will be seen as something else. But it will be won little by little. You don’t expect it to happen overnight. Hopefully fans will appreciate this spinoff for what it is. “
And he concludes: “We’ll be lucky if we ever get closer to what the original series was. So we remain humble hoping that what we do is worthy of having a title descending from Game Of Thrones. “
House of the dragon, which will take place 300 years before the events of Game Of Thrones, is adapted directly by the author of the books, George RR Martin. Release expected in 2022 on HBO Max in the USA.
