In 2021, Marvel films accounted for 30% of the US box office

Five Sony and Disney super-movies have hit the mark: The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man 3, Venom 2 and Black Widow.

Despite the difficulties that the sector may have encountered in 2021, with the successive closings of cinemas, restrictions that are no longer presented etc … the world of cinema has held on and has continued to produce and direct films throughout of the year. And if some releases have dominated the box office, it is clear that in the United States, Marvel productions have largely dominated theaters, representing up to 30% of the national box office (via The Wrap).

The mixed results of the 2021 box office in France and around the world

By Marvel films, we mean the comic book adaptations of the eponymous publisher, whether produced by Disney (The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings), Sony (Venom 2) or both (Spider-Man: No Way Home is a Sony film produced in partnership with Disney). Theatrical hits that have helped keep the profession afloat, with $ 4.45 billion in ticket sales last year in the US. In detail, they all appear in the American top 10 of 2021 (without Fast & Furious 9, they would even all be in the top 5!):

Spider-man 3 is n ° 1 with more than 500 million dollars collected from December 17 to the end of the year (it reaches 630 million at the time of writing, and more than 1 billion in the world)
Shang-Chi is n ° 2 with 224 million dollars raised since September 3
Let There Be Carnage is # 3 with $ 212 million raised since October 1
Black widow is n ° 4 with 183 million dollars raised since July 9
Eternals is n ° 6 with 164 million dollars raised since November 5

A good thing for The Wrap who sees in this Marvelian success a second wind in an era where going to the cinema is often complicated, even if this risks making other more modest productions invisible.

We note for example the flop of Last duel of Ridley Scott, or the new Guillermo del Toro in North America, sometimes deprogrammed to be replaced by sessions of Spider-Man: No Way Home. A double-edged sword.

Ridley Scott analyzes the failure of the Last Duel and blames the Millennials and their smartphones

However, we can expect that 2022, with what the two studios are preparing for this year, will live up to the “Marvel mania”, even stronger than in recent months: Morbius, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder Where Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are for example announced.
