The video game adaptation will be made by the author of Napoleon Dynamite.
The Hollywood Reporter tells us a very good one : not only the film Minecraft is making great strides, but it will be directed by Jared Hess (the cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite) and will have Jason Momoa headlining. The Warner studio has been trying for years to adapt the video game to the cinema, notably with Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Free Guy) to the realization, but nothing progressed. It seems that the arrival of Aquaman in the cast is likely to speed things up, especially with the theatrical success of films like sonic (the sequel is currently a hit) or Free Guyexactly.
The movie script Minecraft will be signed Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures) and Peter Sollett (director of Metal Lordswhich was just released on Netflix), which isn’t saying much… since the game might be one hell of a headache to adapt, unless you resort to a good old meta twist like The Lego Great Adventure (triumph of the Warner Animation studio in 2014). Posted in 2011, Minecraft is not so far from Lego since it offers its players to build their environment (potentially infinite) from large pixels, and therefore to model the game as they wish. Today, the game has sold over 230 million copies, has over 140 million online players and produces tons of merchandise.
Waiting to know more about Minecraftwe will find Jason in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom by James Wan… but not before March 2023. Right after, he will also be the big bad of Fast & Furious 10in theaters May 2023.
