“I have played a lot of Johns in my life? How many Johns have I played? I couldn’t even say … More than ten certainly …”
It’s not his most famous role and yet it is undoubtedly one of his best. In 2005, Keanu reeves embodied a perfect Constantine, in a film noir adapted from the comics, which has become a cult following among DC fans.
With $ 230 million in worldwide revenue (including $ 75 million at the US box office), the feature film by Francis Lawrence (before it launched into the saga Hunger Games) was not a flop, nor a hit. And Warner Bros. never wanted to engage in a sequel, preferring to resume the character of Constantine on the small screen (in Legends of Tomorrow notably), with Matt Ryan in the role – not to mention the new series for HBO Max developed by JJ Abrams.
Keanu Reeves: “Romance is at the Center of Matrix Resurrections”
Nevertheless, 15 years later, Keanu reeves does not seem to have given up on making a Constantine 2 ! In an interview with Esquire, he replies, not without a hint of irony:
“I loved playing Constantine. John Constantine … Have I played a lot of John in my life? How many Johns have I played? I couldn’t even say it … More than ten certainly … But anyway, yes, I would like to have the chance to play again Constantine one day…”
For now, nothing is planned. And anyway, if Matrix 4 hits the mark and generates other sequels, and if Keanu reeves actually joins the MCU, the one that’s already John wick in the cinema will find it difficult to find time for new exorcisms.
