Licorice Pizza: first trailer for the new Paul Thomas Anderson

After Phantom Thread, PTA returns in the 70s.

Licorice Pizza ? “licorice pizza”? What does the mysterious title of Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film mean? Nothing too crazy, actually: this is the name of a 1970s record store chain in Southern California – “licorice pizza” being, you guessed it, vinyl. The mystery being dispelled, it’s time for the cinema! PTA leaves the 50s English fashion of Phantom Thread, to return to the California of the 70s. That of Boogie Nights and Inherent Vice, that of his childhood – he started shooting his own films when he was not ten years old. It would be easy to see Licorice Pizza as a barely disguised autobiography, since the film tells the story of Gary, an ex-child actor who wants to become a director while still in high school. And he’s played by Cooper Hoffman, the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, PTA’s favorite actor. Around Gary / Cooper, a young actress played by Alana Haim (from the band of the same name, for which PTA has shot music videos), a politician played by Benny Safdie, and Bradley Cooper as Jon Peters, Barbra Streisand’s third husband ! Suffice to say that the PTA fanclub is already seriously revising its files on the PTA cinematic universe before delving into the world of liquorice pizzas. But we will have to wait until January 5, 2022 for the French release of the film …
