Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Loki's season 1 finale.

Sylvie, the fiercest and most resilient of all the Loki variants that the Time Variance Authority has attempted to prune, allows her vengeful instincts to triumph in the Loki season 1 finale - but what does that mean for her future in the Marvel CU?

Played by Sophia Di Martino, Sylvie was kept a closely-guarded secret until she made her debut at the end of Loki episode 2. The character is loosely based on two figures from Marvel Comics: Lady Loki, who was created when (for complicated reasons) Loki was reincarnated into Lady Sif's body; and Sylvie Lushton, a girl from Oklahoma who one day woke up to find that she had Asgardian superpowers, and restyled herself in the image of Enchantress. However, Sylvie's story in Loki is largely original. Season 1 revealed that she is a Loki variant who was arrested by the TVA when she was just a little girl, but managed to escape with a stolen TemPad and vowed revenge against the TVA for the life they stole from her.

After Sylvie met the Loki variant L1130, who was arrested after stealing the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame, a very unusual romance blossomed between these two versions of the same person. But while Loki L1130 is able to overcome his obsession with winning thrones and power, Sylvie can't let go of her hatred for the TVA and the person who created it. Here's what that could mean for her future.

Sylvie's Choice At The End of Loki Season 1

Loki Episode 6 Sylvie and Loki Crying

After getting past Alioth, reaching the Citadel at the End of Time, and rejecting Miss Minutes' offer to place them back in the timeline and let them live out a happy life together, Loki and Sylvie finally meet the man behind the curtain: He Who Remains. Though the character is never explicitly named in Loki's season 1 finale, his backstory identifies "He Who Remains" as Nathaniel Richards a.k.a. Kang the Conqueror, a 31st century scientist with a particular interest in parallel universes. After many different variants of Kang succeeded in contacting versions of themselves in other universes, some of the Kang variants grew hostile and power-hungry. This is what caused the Multiversal War that Miss Minutes' described in the TVA's orientation video. Eventually one Kang variant ended the Multiversal War and eliminated all the other versions of himself by weaponizing Alioth, a creature created in the maelstrom of the Multiversal War. He created the TVA, "pruned" all of the timelines except for his own, and hid himself away in the Citadel at the End of Time.

When Sylvie and Loki confront him, Kang reveals that he actually drew them there on purpose in the hope that they would take his place in guarding the sacred timeline and ruling over the TVA. This is, as Loki realized in episode 1, "the greatest power in the universe." Sylvie isn't interested in this power, and instead simply wants to kill Kang and give people back their free will, allowing the sacred timeline to split off into infinite timelines and become a multiverse once again. However, Kang warns that if she does this it will simply cause his variants to go to war again, and many of the others that emerge will be a lot nastier than him.

Sylvie is left with a few different choices. She can kill Kang and finally get her revenge on the TVA's creator, no matter how hollow it might feel or how terrible the consequences might be, and another Multiversal War will end up putting Kang back in his place within the Citadel. She can join Loki in taking command of the Citadel and the TVA, with the two of them effectively becoming They Who Remain and allowing Kang to retire. Or she can take Loki's suggestion that the two of them slow down and try to come up with a solution. Sylvie clearly cares for Loki, which is why she cries during her fight and chooses to kiss him and then throw him through a time door to safety. But ultimately, she can't be swayed from her mission.

What Happens After Sylvie Kills Kang

Loki Episode 6 Sylvie Kills Kang

While He Who Remains is revealing his plans to Sylvie and Loki, he passes a "threshold" where he no longer knows what is going to happen, and the sacred timeline begins to branch off into different timelines. For the first time since the multiverse was organized into a single timeline, free will becomes possible again, and Sylvie uses her free will to stab Kang in the chest. He doesn't beg for his life or even seem unhappy about dying, simply winking at Sylvie and telling her that he'll see her again soon. For her part, Sylvie doesn't seem to get any satisfaction out of killing him, instead collapsing to the floor of the Citadel's tower as the timeline begins to fracture around it.

Meanwhile, at the TVA, Loki tries to explain what has happened to Mobius and Hunter B-15, only to realize that they have no memory of who he is. The statues of the Time-Keepers at TVA headquarters have been replaced with statues of Kang, so clearly some kind of major change has happened to the timeline. It could be that, as Kang predicted, another Multiversal War broke out and a Kang variant once again became He Who Remains, creating the TVA and keeping the timeline in check. However, it's also possible that Sylvie has taken Kang's place and seized control of the Citadel at the End of Time, becoming She Who Remains. Like Kang once did, she could have created a proxy leader for the TVA to disguise the real power at the head of it - only this time, the proxy leader is Kang rather than the Time-Keepers. Perhaps there's even an animatronic Kang in the throne room where the animatronic Time-Keepers once were.

When Loki finds Mobius and Hunter amid the chaos of a TVA that is scrambling to react to the rapidly expanding multiverse, they are discussing what can be done about the branching timelines and Hunter B-15 wonders, "Does he want us to just let them all branch?" Whoever is running the TVA now either doesn't yet know how to restore the sacred timeline, or doesn't want to.

When Sylvie Will Appear Next In The MCU

Loki Episode 6 Loki and Sylvie Outside the Citadel

Sylvie can be expected to return in Loki season 2, which was officially announced via a short post-credits scene at the end of the finale. The main storyline of Loki, Sylvie, the Time Variance Authority and the newly unleashed variants of He Who Remains will continue there. However, given that Loki has effectively created the multiverse, there's a good chance that the show will have ties to the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It has already been reported that Tom Hiddleston will be appearing in Doctor Strange 2, so Sophia Di Martino could make an appearance as Sylvie as well. Meanwhile, Jonathan Majors will be returning as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, opening the door for a potential Sylvie appearance in that movie as well.

What Happened To Sylvie In Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics Sylvie Gets Banished By Enchantress

Sylvie's fate in Marvel Comics doesn't offer many clues about what to expect in Loki season 2, since the character in the show is very different from the character in the comics. Sylvie Lushton isn't a Loki variant, but was given her powers (and possibly created from scratch) by Lady Loki for the purpose of spreading chaos and mischief. This version of Sylvie is largely characterized by being a pretender: she adopts the Asgardian manner of speech, but frequently forgets to use it; and in her desperation to be seen and respected as a god she takes up the name "Enchantress," which actually belongs to the Asgardian goddess Amora. When Amora finds out that an upstart mortal has stolen her identity in the 2015 comic series Illuminati, she is none too pleased by the insult. As punishment, she banishes Sylvie to "the harshest of the Ten Realms" (possibly Niflheim, the land of the dishonored dead). That was the last time that Sylvie Lushton was seen, and it remains to be seen whether she'll survive her ordeal. For now, the fates of both the comic book and TV versions of Sylvie are uncertain.
