Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader

But George Lucas did not hear it that way.

What if Luke Skywalker had gone to the dark side of the Force? This is what his interpreter would have liked, Mark Hamillin Return of the Jedi (1983). In an interview for Entertainment Weekly, the 68-year-old actor returned to the filming of the sixth episode of the cult saga where we see him face Darth Vader. He remembers that at the time, the scenario of this third opus, which he considered “too predictable”, did not really suit him.

I remember complaining to George [Lucas] about something in Return of the Jedi, he says. I had told him ‘It’s so predictable and mundane’, what he answered ‘Mark, don’t forget. These films are made for children.’ His first intention was to make films for kids! Teens and young people. And we added our adult sensibility to it, which was not good.”

Looking back, the actor, who was in his thirties at the time of filming, admits the director was right: “He’s the man for the job. He knows what he wants and I realized he was right. He said that all fairy tales have a happy ending. I thought on the contrary that after The Empire Strikes Back We should have completely let go for the last installment, but there’s a reason George is where he is and I’m where I am.”

By “letting go”, Mark Hamill meant to upset the scenario by making the young Luke Skywalker walk in the footsteps of his father, who became a Sith lord. A narrative arc that has long fantasized fans of the saga. “I thought I was going to get meanhe admits. Because I wore black from head to toe, I thought I was going to turn to the dark side of the Force. And, of course, that I would then redeem myself. But this film corresponds to the vision I had of it compared to the previous episode. Every actor wants to play their evil twin at some point.”
