Mel Gibson announces he will direct Lethal Weapon 5 himself

Since the death of filmmaker Richard Donner, this sequel project was thought to be abandoned. Surprise! It is one of its two stars who will take back the controls.

Following the success of the first four parts released between 1987 and 1990, Lethal Weapon 5 has been in the works for several years, the actors Mel Gibson and Danny glover having expressed several times their desire to find their characters Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh one last time in the cinema. In December 2020, the historic director of the franchise, Richard Donner, announced that the scenario was written and that they would finally be able to embark on this ultimate adventure: he insisted on the fact that this film would complete the saga, before they were “too old for this bullshit”, Mel being 64 at the time, Danny 74 and himself 90. Unfortunately, he died a few months later, in July 2021, which made fans of these buddy movies assume that Lethal Weapon 5 was going to fall into the water. It was without counting on Mel Gibson, who has just announced that he intended to direct it himself.

Richard Donner promises Lethal Weapon 5 will be the last

It was during a meeting with London fans, organized this weekend, that the director of Braveheart, The Passion of Christ and You will not kill, revealed that he intended to direct this sequel, still carried by himself, therefore, and by Danny Glover.

We do not yet know the shooting schedule, nor the release date of Lethal Weapon 5. For the moment, Mel Gibson must turn in The Continental, the spinoff series from another action franchise: John wick.
