Paul Schrader: “First Reformed is the culmination of my career”
A synopsis has been released: “The story is that of a former military interrogator, turned player, haunted by the decisions of his past”. We also know that Isaac will help a young man to take revenge on an army colonel, whom the two have known well …
In addition to this quality cast – Oscar Isaac, therefore, Willem Dafoe (the latter has already worked with Schrader twice, for The Last Temptation of Christ and Dog eat dog) and Tiffany Haddish – The Card Counter seems to be in the same line as Taxi Driver or Raging Bull, which he scripted: we know the attraction of the director and scriptwriter for tortured characters.
The film will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival next September, where it will compete for awards such as the Golden Lion. And the fine Schrader-Scorsese team will be assembled, since the latter is the executive producer of the film. Last year during the pandemic, Schrader screened a rough cut of the film for a few people, including Martin Scorsese. Schrader reveals: “I asked them all: ‘I have four scenes left to shoot. I can rewrite them. What am I missing? What should I add? How should I write these four scenes? ‘ I was able to rewrite these scenes and make the relationships much better. Not all productions have the ability to do this. “
The French release date has not yet been revealed.
