Reboot of The Mummy with Tom Cruise: the director recognizes that it was a huge failure

“The biggest of my life, both personally and professionally,” regrets Alex Kurtzman.

Released in the summer of 2017, The Mummy was to participate in launching the “Dark Universe” from Universal, a saga bringing together several monster films, all of which would have been embodied by stars: for example Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man, Angelina Jolie as the bride of Frankenstein, and of course Tom Cruise as the mummy hunter. However, this blockbuster was a critical failure, and if a few monster films have since been launched within the studio, these were smaller productions: Invisible Manwith Elisabeth Moss, in 2020, for example, or the new Wolfman that Derek Cianfrance is preparing with Ryan Gosling.

Alex Kurtzman: “The Mummy is a rather special ‘Tom Cruise movie'”

Five years later, its director Alex Kurtzman recognizes that it was a failure with The Playlist : “I’m okay with the idea that you learn nothing from his successes and everything from his failures. And that was probably the biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally.” Currently behind the series The Man Who Fell to Earthwith Chiwetel Ejiofor, he details: “I regret a million things about The Mummy, and at the same time, it gave me gifts that are incredibly beautiful. I only really became a director with this film, and it’s not because I directed it well, it’s because I failed. It made me stronger, clearer as a director. A real gift, because now I know that when I feel like something is wrong, I no longer have to be silent. I’m going to talk about it, get to the end of this impression. If you look in the history of people who have accomplished incredible things, you will see that they all have in common to have done this after having experienced failure. So looking back, I look back on that with gratitude. It took me a while to accept it, but now my life is better because of it.”
