Sad month of March for French theaters despite The Batman and Le Printemps du Cinéma

This is the smallest box office since March 1999!

The CNC, relayed by The French Movie reveals that the month of March 2022 represented historically low scores at the French box office, and this after months of January and February already down compared to previous years. 13.19 million cinema tickets were sold in France from March 1 to 31, 2022, the lowest score since 1999: that year, March attendance was 12.6 million tickets sold. Since 2006, it has remained above 15 million vouchers sold, and has even hovered around 19/20 million since 2016. Taking into account the figures for the first quarter, the drop is undeniable: 36.9 million tickets have been sold in France since January, compared to 38.3 million over the same period in 2020, and 59.1 million in 2019. French productions represent 51% of admissions, and American blockbusters, 29.5%.

2.15 million admissions for the Printemps du Cinéma

Since the Covid-19 epidemic and the double closure of dark rooms, the cinema sector has struggled to find correct figures. A drop over time that worries film professionals. In detail, the Printemps du Cinéma still managed to record good scores: 3.1 million spectators went to the cinema the week of March 16 to 22, in particular during the three days when the reduced price of 4 euros per film was offered everywhere in France. But the following week, from March 23 to 29, marked the worst of the year, and even since June 2021, when the audience gauge was limited to 35% and a curfew started at 9 p.m. However, March 30 was a good day thanks to 430,000 tickets counted by ComScore, notably divided between sonic 2 and Morbius.

The Batman is the best-selling film in France in March 2022 with 2.7 million admissions. It is followed by another American blockbuster, Uncharted, released in February and viewed by 900,000 people that month. Then we find mainly French films: comedy Retirement home was also seen by 900,000 spectators in March, the dramas Goliath and Our Lady Burns around 600,000 countermarks follow. Building permit, Maigret, Superhero despite himself and Valiant all sold over 500,000 tickets this month. The Japanese animated film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 stops just below this symbolic bar, selling 450,000 tickets in two weeks. The documentary The Oak attracted more than 200,000 spectators. So much for the successes, but several French productions recorded during this time disappointing scores in relation to their wide distribution, such as Then we dance (200,000 entries), Murder Party and Three times nothing (70,000) or Kung Fu Zohra (45,000).
