The actor says he thought about getting involved in the conflict, on the ground. “Where I am in life is far from all that, but going to fight in Ukraine is something that crosses your mind…”

He was in Ukraine at the start of the conflict, to film and document the war launched by Vladimir Putin. And Sean Penn could perfectly leave tomorrow, but no longer with a camera in hand: “I was at the Brentwood gas station the other day and now I’m thinking about taking up arms against Russia…what the fuck is going on?”

In the columns of the American magazine, Hollywood Authentic, the actor reveals that he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Zoom two years ago, “at the start of the pandemic“. He tells : “We first started discussing a potential documentary about his country that didn’t specifically focus on the war. And since then, there have been many exchanges between us. Then I went to see him, face to face, on the eve of the invasion. And I was with him during the invasion, the first day.

Today, Sean Penn even plans to fight, a gun in hand: “The only reason I could have stayed longer in Ukraine, the last time it would have been to take a gun, probably without a bulletproof vest… because as a foreigner, I would have wanted to give this vest bulletproof to one of the civilians who doesn’t have one or a fighter with more skill than me, or a younger man or woman who could fight longer… Where I am in the Life is far from all that, but going to fight in Ukraine is something that crosses your mind…

Penn returned to the United States in early March but confides his intention to return there: “My intention is to go back to Ukraine… But I’m not stupid, I’m not sure what I can offer. I don’t spend a lot of time texting the President or his staff while they are under siege and their people are being murdered.”

With his non-profit organization CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), founded in 2010 after the earthquake in Haiti, Sean Penn is currently working to offer support to Ukrainian refugees in Poland: “I have a lot to do with CORE on the refugee reception side. As a result, I shoot more things for the documentary…”
