Comedian Volodymyr Zelensky became president of Ukraine after playing an ordinary citizen who became head of state.
With the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops, which began on February 24, President Volodymyr Zelensky became a national hero, and even internationally. Remained in the capital, Kiev, to lead the resistance, he is praised for his courage against Vladimir Putin. A fate all the more incredible since Zelensky was still only an acrobat a few years ago. Before becoming head of state, he indeed led a career as an actor that led him in 2015 to become the star of a humorous series entitled servant of the peoplein which he already played… the President of Ukraine!
Available on Arte since November, the series is gaining popularity with current events. servant of the people consists of 3 seasons (the first of which is in replay on Arte.tv until May 18) and had unprecedented success in Ukraine. Its synopsis, if it seems anecdotal in 2015 at the time of the launch of the series, seems premonitory today. After being filmed without his knowledge while he virulently criticized the government plagued by a corrupt elite, an honest history professor played by Volodymyr Zelensky accedes, against all odds, to the presidency of Ukraine. A fiction that became reality in 2019, with the entry into the Ukrainian presidency of Zelensky, who largely surfed on the popularity of the series and named his party “Servant of the people”. Result: he crushed his competitor, outgoing President Petro Poroshenko, with 73.2% of the vote in the second round.
