Several voices, including Jim Carrey, expressed surprise that Will Smith was able to quietly attend the rest of the Oscars ceremony and receive his award after slapping Chris Rock on stage, live in front of millions of viewers and a dumbfounded audience. However, in a new press release published on Wednesday evening, and notably relayed by Varietythe Academy let it be known that it tried to get it out of the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles:

In this text, The Academy condemns even more strongly Will Smith and his “violations of codes of conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy“.

She also apologizes to Chris Rock, while “thanking for his resilience“, and gives more details on the current procedure. The next meeting of the board will take place on April 18, and this is where the sanction could fall. Will Smith risks being suspended, or even outright excluded from the Oscars. He has 15 days to send a written response.
