“We were there, wondering what had just happened.”
Announced for March 28season 3 ofAtlantaseries of Donald Glover, will take the band to the lands of the old continent, sometimes to London and sometimes to Paris or Amsterdam. Filmed in Europe, this third season saw the team of the series face ordinary racism during an outing in London, on the first day of filming in England. A rather unfortunate anecdote reported by the team during a press conference (via Insider): “It was really terrible.”
Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Gloveras well as Stefani Robinson (all co-screenwriters of the series) indeed say that during their first evening of filming in London, they were approached by a gang made up of a girl and two or three boys while they were next to a closed bar, quite alcoholic. They recognize Donald Glover (also known as Childish Gambino), and ask if the writing staff knows of a place where they can buy alcohol. “I think we talked to them for a second.” Stephen continues to recount, explaining that one of the men in the group started saying that the authors ofAtlanta could break into the bar because “you all carry hammers”referring to slang for pistols. “You have to be aware that all the screenwriters ofAtlanta are black. So it’s referring to the fact that we all have hammers and we can get into this place, which we ignored.”Stephen said.
“It was so insulting, but not insulting at the same time because it took us five minutes to fully understand”, Robinson said. One of the men in the group then clarifies his thoughts by repeating: “You are black, you went to prison and you do things like that”. Eventually, the tape leaves after one of the men comes back to the girl, who stayed with the writers, and tells her “Run, they will rape you”. And the girl to leave apologizing. “It was really terrible. We were there, wondering what had just happened”, concludes Donald Glover.
