The Batman on the cover of Première: “This Batman practically lives in the gutter” [exclu]

Robert Pattinson gives us a glimpse of who his Dark Knight will be in Matt Reeves’ film.

Batman returns and is not there to butter the sandwiches. With The Batman, director Matt Reeves intends to reinvent the myth in cinema with a dark and tortuous film, in which the Dark Knight (played by Robert Pattinson) will be confronted with the corruption of the notables of Gotham City and the Machiavellian plan of the Riddler (Paul Dano). Investigative film, film noir and (a little) horror film, The Batman is on the cover of issue 526 of First, in kiosks Wednesday January 26. For the occasion, Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson granted us an interview where they tell in detail their vision of the Caped Crusader.

As a preview, here is an excerpt from what Robert Pattinson reveals about the psychological state of his Batman: There is this rule with Batman: he must not kill. It can be interpreted in two ways. Either he only wants to inflict the appropriate punishment, or he wants to kill and his self-control prevents him from doing so! I imagined it that way from the rehearsal of the first fight, I thought it was funnier: something in him just wanted to slit the guy’s throat! I told myself that if he spends his nights chasing criminals, it is impossible that he does not take pleasure in it. He suffers and it is a desire that overwhelms him. And by dint of knocking, his mind clears, he calms down, he reaches a state close to plenitude. I’m sure in this first fight, he manages to convince himself that every guy in front of him is the one who killed his mother (Laughs.) And so that allows him to vent all his rage. »

And Robert Pattinson to add: The interesting thing is that this Batman practically lives in the gutter. He’s nowhere at home except on the street when he’s wearing the suit. He lives a criminal life, but without committing crimes! I felt like I could get something out of that. Anyway, I could only play a superhero if he was really dirty! (Laughs.) »

Here is the official synopsis of The Batman, in theaters on March 2: “After roaming the streets of the city as Batman and instilling fear in criminals, Bruce Wayne explored the most disreputable neighborhoods of Gotham City. Aware that he can only count on a few trusted allies – Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lieutenant James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) – among the city’s corrupt notables, the lone vigilante has established himself as the only citizen capable of obtaining revenge. When a killer preys on Gotham’s elite by masterminding sadistic crimes, a host of mysterious clues lead our masked investigator deep into the underworld where he crosses paths with Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, (Zoë Kravitz ), Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton, aka The Riddler, (Paul Dano). As he begins to gain certainty that the criminal may be in Gotham and that he now sees through his game, Batman must forge new alliances, unmask the culprit and restore justice to a city for too long in prey to abuse of power and corruption. »
