Amazon is reverting to its original plan.

Shortly after announcing that the spinoff series of Lord of the Rings (more precisely from Silmarillion) will be broadcast from September 2, 2022, weekly, Amazon reveals that its second season will go into production in the UK, not New Zealand. A situation which logically displeases the local authorities, who congratulated themselves on having been able to create hundreds of jobs thanks to this ambitious series: the Minister of the Economy Stuart Nash even revealed that Amazon had spent 460 million pounds (436 million dollars) as part of this in-country shoot, out of around $ 1 billion in total.

The crazy budget of the Lord of the Rings adaptation

Yes New Zealand’s choice to serve as natural backdrops for this new adaptation of the Lord of the Rings had surprised no one, Peter Jackson having already chosen these same places to shoot his two trilogies, Amazon recalls that the original plan was to film the series in Scotland : in 2019, the firm had even reserved gigantic premises to shoot the first season, before finally moving everything thousands of kilometers away, when the Covid-19 epidemic imposed the closure of several large productions. By this time, the New Zealanders had succeeded in enforcing a policy of “zero Covid”, just like Australia, and the two countries took the opportunity to welcome many teams of films and series.

Ian McKellen’s call to “save” JRR Tolkien’s house

The idea behind this change of filming locations is to be as close as possible to the descriptions of landscapes made by JRR Tolkien in his books (the author was indeed inspired by the north of England, Scotland and Ireland), but also to respect the studio’s current strategy, which brings together most of its British productions in the United Kingdom. The production also thanks in his press release “the people and the government of New Zealand for their hospitality and dedication in creating this debut series. It was an amazing place to start this epic journey.”
