At the heart of the first film in the saga, she only appears in cameo in The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Warning, spoilers! Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets comes out this week at the cinema and if you don’t want to know anything about the new film in the saga derived from Harry Potterbetter stop reading here.
At the beginning of March, the “Potterheads” wondered where Tina Goldstein, the main female heroine of the fantastic animalsin 2016, which is played by Katherine Waterston. She was completely absent from the promotion of this sequel. No trace in the trailers, nor on the character posters, which nevertheless listed many heroes, villains and creatures of this third episode: no less than 18 posters shared by Warner Bros! A noticeable absence, because she played an important role with the hero. A powerful American magician, she introduced Norbert (and the public) to the differences between the local magical world and the one he knew in England. She was also close to her sister Queenie (Alison Sudol), before she fell to the dark side in the sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. For this second installment released in cinemas in 2018, she was still there, trying like the others to stop the big bad of the saga. His presence at the preview of Dumbledore’s Secretsin London, reassured the fans, even if she did not participate in her press conference just before, nor did she publicly mention her return in this third film during the brief interviews organized on the Red carpet.
Where is Tina? Katherine Waterston is completely absent from the Fantastic Beasts 3 promo
So, is Tina finally present on the screen? The answer is yes, but in a hurry. Her absence is justified in the film by her friend Norbert Dragonneau (Eddie Redmayne) from the start of the adventure, when he explains to his brother Thésée (Callum Turner) that she has been promoted to head of MACUSA, the Ministry of the magic of the United States, and that she has a lot of work to do solo in her home country, away from the rest of the gang. Then, we catch a glimpse of it in a photo, in the hero’s famous suitcase. Then we finally see her in the flesh, quickly, at the very end of the film, when she meets Norbert at the wedding of her sister Queenie with Jacob (Dan Fogler). He barely has time to compliment her on her new look when they are whisked away by Thésée and Eulalie Hicks (Jessica Williams) to go back inside and enjoy the party. She only has a few seconds of screen, then.
Why was Tina’s role so reduced? Scenario speaking, nothing really justifies that she does not support her friends in their fight against Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen). Theseus has an equivalent position within, but at the British Ministry of Magic, and he fully participates in the adventure, so why not her? What could she possibly have so important to do as Grindelwald grows ever more influential, and dangerous, in Europe? Has her role been reduced to make room for Eulalie, who comes like her from the Ilvermorny school in the United States? We will probably know more in the sequels, the end of the Dumbledore’s Secrets hinting that there will be at least one more film to be able to come full circle with the plot of Harry Potter…
Jude Law – Fantastic Beasts 3: “This is not the final form of Dumbledore”
Is the answer off the shelf? Katherine Waterson was one of the leading actresses of the saga Harry Potter to openly condemn author JK Rowling’s transphobic comments. Just like Emma Watson (Hermione), Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) or Eddie Redmaynebut the role of the latter being central in Fantastic Beastsit would have been difficult to justify its reduction in this sequel.
Could the problems encountered during filming have impacted his presence on screen? Filming started in October 2020, then was turned upside down by the dismissal of Johnny Depp the next month. If the production has quickly hired Mads Mikkelsen to replace him (in December of the same year), the shots were also delayed because of the Covid-19 epidemic, which hit the actress hard in 2020? First scheduled for November 2021 at the cinema, Fantastic Beasts 3 was eventually pushed back to July 2022, before being brought forward to the spring once the team had caught up in the studio, when filming finally wrapped late last summer. All these schedule changes may have impacted the presence of the actress, who had to shoot, also during the summer of 2021, in babylon, by Damien Chazelle, on which she had committed before catching the Covid. Is it thus simply a problem of agenda which pushed the scenario writers to reduce its role in this episode, to potentially make it return more in the continuation? Or was this absence foreseen from the design of the Fantastic Beasts 3 ? Eddie Redmayne recently explained that comedians only have access to the scenarios of this franchise that film by filmand thus had only a vague idea of the overall story of this prequel of Harry Potter. JK Rowling and Steve Kloves can therefore develop the characters as they wish, as long as it respects what we learned from them in the novels…
