In competition

Paul Verhoeven will finally present Benedetta, his second film shot in French after It, in competition at Cannes, in 2016. Worn by Virginie Efira, it follows a 15th century nun who falls madly in love with another sister from her convent. Then Catherine Corsini (The beautiful season) will reveal The divide, whose title evokes as much the couple in crisis played by Valéria Bruni-Tedeschi and Marina Foïs, as that of France, which is divided in the heart of a Parisian demonstration, or the crisis of overworked caregivers of a hospital.

Out of competition

Three films will be in the spotlight on this Friday: Where’s Anne Frank?, the new animated work by Ari Folman (Waltz with Bachir) freely inspired by Diary of Anne Frank, Mothering Sunday, Ava Husson and Blood oranges, by Jean-Christophe Meurisse. The director ofApnea will make him cross paths with several protagonists during a crazy night: “At the same time in France, a retired couple in debt tries to win a rock contest, a minister is suspected of tax evasion, a young teenager meets a sexual freak. A long night will begin. The dogs are released.” The pitch ofBlood oranges This justifies his selection in the Midnight Screening.

As for those of the new category “Cinema & climate”, they will be dedicated to Walk on water, in which the actress Aïssa Maiga, who signs her third production here, tells the daily life of villagers in northern Niger who are victims of global warming, and Mountain sailor, by Karim Ainouz, where the latter returns to Algeria in search of his roots.
