Watching Dune on TV is “ridiculous” according to Denis Villeneuve

“It’s like going speedboat in a bathtub,” says the director.

Eight months after his letter in vitriol, in which he declared “Warner Bros. maybe just killed the Dune franchise“, Denis Villeneuve did not change his mind. The output of Dune simultaneously on HBO Max in the United States (October 22) is still a bad idea, according to him. This is what the Canadian director reiterated in the columns of Total Film (via Indiewire), while being much more optimistic about the chances of being able to shoot Dune: part 2.

First of all, the enemy of cinema is the pandemic. It’s a fact. We are aware that the movie industry is under enormous pressure right now. I understand. But I’m still unhappy with the way it went. Honestly, watching Dune on a TV, the best comparison I can find is it’s like going speedboat in a bathtub. To me, this is ridiculous. This film was conceived as a tribute to the cinema experience on the big screen “.

Zendaya will be the heroine of Dune 2

Dune will indeed be available on HBO Max for 31 days, and fans hope that this device will not damage the film’s revenue to the point of jeopardizing the funding of its second part, Villeneuve having clearly explained that his Dune adapted only half of Frank Herbert’s book. The filmmaker wants to be reassuring on this point, affirming that “everyone at Warner Bros. and Legendary is 100% behind the project. It would really have to go badly at the box office for Dune: Part 2 to be canceled, because they love the movie. They are proud of the film and they want the project to go forward (…) I am very optimistic“.

In France, lucky ones that we are, the film worn by Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya will be visible in theaters from September 15th. Trailer :
