What if …? Suicide Squad ends with MCU-worthy conclusion

What if ...? episode 9

What if the Watcher created the coolest superhero team with Guardians of the Multiverse?

The animated interlude What if …? has taken on epic proportions in recent weeks. To the point of completing the first season in apotheosis this Wednesday. Episode 9, “What If … The Watcher Broke His Oath?”, Is, as announced, the sequel to Episode 8. But even more, it is the continuation and end of all previous episodes!

“People are starting to understand that all the plots in the series now point to a common story. And it is!”, confirms the director Bryan Andrews at EW. And for good reason: the Watcher no longer has a solution to prevent Ultron boosted with Infinity Stone from destroying all known universes. He must intervene. And for that, he will assemble a team of fighters. Those we met week after week in What if …? The famous Captain Carter, the Star-Lord version of T’Challa, the Gamora who killed Thanos, the Killmonger who became Black Panther, as well as the crazy Thor who grew up without Loki … And to accompany them: the overpowered Doctor Strange who tried to change the course of time to the point of losing himself and his universe … Together, they form the Guardians of the Multiverse ! Yes it slams!

More badass than Avengers, stronger than the Guardians of the Galaxy, there is something of a Suicide Squad in this team composed largely of anti-heroes. A damn cool bunch, let’s face it! “From the start of the season, we had this idea to create all these great characters, but with whom we could only do 20 or 30 minutes. So we thought it was great to find them all for the finale! decided that, we were able to refine each other’s backstories, make them a little darker, more ambitious, knowing that we were going to offer them some sort of resolution at the end …“says chief screenwriter AC Bradley.

What if ...? Guardians of the Multiverse

The Guardians of the Multiverse will therefore spend period 9 to face the omnipotent Ultron, so untouchable last week … and yet in big trouble in this final. Here is clearly the catch of this last chapter: the invulnerable Divine Being suddenly seems to have demoted in the hierarchy of the MCU. While he had easily dominated the Watcher moments before, here he is on par with a small handful of heroes that he would have made short work of in Episode 8 … It is true, however, that our Guardians have a big wild card on their team: Doctor Strange Supreme! Here, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the Sorcerer Supreme for the first time in the MCU and shows just how cosmically powerful the magician is. A perfect teasing for Marvel, which managed to make the fans salivate. After that, we are necessarily curious to find the character in six months, in Doctor Strange 2

With her help, Natasha and Peggy manage to poison Ultron from within. He is defeated, or almost. Armin Zola’s AI now has control of this invincible body. So Doctor Strange ultimately offers to sacrifice his existence to contain him. As if to atone for his previous sins, he agrees to spend eternity watching “Ultron Zola”, imprisoned in a space-time magic ball, trapped alongside Killmonger, who betrayed his team after the battle, giving in to temptation. of the absolute power of the Stones … None of the Guardians dies and each one finally finds his universe, as if nothing had happened. This season 1 of What if …? thus concludes with a total happy end (moreover claimed by Peggy in the last minute). In the post-credits scene, Captain Carter even finds his Steve Rogers! The Watcher is watching again. The MCU can resume normal activity.
