Why Pathé will only show Coda in cinemas for 2 days

The Best Picture Oscar is already available on AppleTV+.

The Oscar-winning remake of The Aries Family Coda – will be visible in some French cinemas for two days only, on April 23 and 24. Why so little time? The film, exclusive to AppleTV +, could not be released in theaters on the occasion of a national release. Indeed, the French law on media chronology prohibits simultaneous release on streaming platforms and in cinemas.

CODA or the historic slap of platform films at the 2022 Oscars

If the film can be seen on the big screen, it is thanks to a visa allowing the works to be released on the territory on two conditions: no more than 2 days and within the limit of 500 screenings. Jerome SeydouxCEO of Pathé, said in an interview for Le Figaro : “ I think this film, which is the remake of a French success, produced by French people, Oscar winner in Hollywood, should be released in theaters. American platforms are very pragmatic. They don’t necessarily object to that. On the contrary, I think that, tomorrow, the room will be a real storefront for them. Because the intense competition in which they engage forces them to concern themselves with the promotion of their works and the cinemas are there to offer them a real showcase. When we decided to produce this feature film with Philippe Rousselet, it was to release it theatrically all over the world. But the crisis arrived and the theaters closed. So Apple TV+ made us an offer we couldn’t refuse.”
