In its press release, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first apologizes for not having taken the full measure of the gesture of Will Smithin the moment : “The 94th Oscars was meant to be a celebration for the many people in our community who did an incredible job last year. However, those moments were overshadowed by Mr. Smith’s unacceptable and harmful behavior shown on stage. During the program, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For that, we are sorry. It was an opportunity for us to set an example (…) and we were not up to it. We weren’t prepared for the unprecedented.”

After three weeks of reflection, the Oscars have therefore delivered their verdict: “Today the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to the actions of Will Smith at the Oscars. In addition to accepting his resignation, the Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, that Mr. Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person. or virtually, including the Academy Awards.”
After winning the statuette, the same evening, for her role in The Williams Method, Will Smith had already in sight a double with Emancipation from director Antoine Fuqua, based on a true story and about a slave who joins the Union army. His chances are therefore almost reduced to nothing with this crippling sanction.

Even more, the Academy would like to express its “gratitudeto Chris Rock, who knew “keep your cool in extraordinary circumstances”.
Looking to the future, the Academy wants to take steps to ensure that such an event does not happen again in the future and speaks of a “broader goal of protecting the safety of our artists and guests, in order to restore confidence in the Academy.”
In response to this sanction, Will Smith soberly took note in a press release: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
