With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel series become essential

Based on the screenplay of WandaVision, the MCU requires viewers to have seen the series. And that’s just the beginning…

Warning, some spoilers to follow on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Do you absolutely have to have a Disney+ subscription to follow the MCU? Until now, the question did not really arise, the Marvel Studios series not being essential to understanding the films, except for a few details. But things get complicated with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness : the film takes for granted the viewing of Wanda Vision, and bases all of Wanda Maximof’s character trauma on the events of the series. Obviously, the scenario tries to summarize things with more or less well-felt dialogues, but the spectator who has not seen a single episode of Wanda Vision will find it difficult to understand (and relate to) the concept of “magical children”, after whom the Scarlet Witch runs throughout Doctor Strange 2. We are well beyond the wink for fans: Wanda is the main antagonist of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and his pain his only motivation.

Things get complicated for casual viewers of Marvel productions. It was already becoming difficult to grasp the ramifications of the script of most feature films (Multiverse of Madness is the 28th!) without having seen them all, but adding the series becomes downright unmanageable if you are not totally diligent. A rather radical choice on the part of Marvel Studios and Disney, who certainly hope to increase the number of subscribers to the home streaming platform.

And for a series almost disconnected from the MCU like Moon Knight, lots of others weave very deep ties. We think in particular of Falcon and the Winter Soldierwhich tells how and why the Falcon became the new Captain America (at the time of the theatrical release of Captain America 4better to have caught up with all that) or to Miss Marvel (next June on Disney+) which will introduce the character of Kamala Khan, who we will then see again in the film The Marvels. Series Secret Invasion could also be a big screenplay piece, with ramifications throughout the MCU, as it will chronicle Nick Fury’s battle against the Skrulls, shape-shifting aliens who have been secretly infiltrating Earth for years.

Note also that Loki – whose season 2 is expected to arrive in 2023 – is a big, big piece of the Marvel puzzle, with all its revelations about how the multiverse, the sacred timeline and the TVA (Time Variance Authority) work…

The future of Marvel Studios is therefore played out in a balancing act: it will be necessary to satisfy both the hardcore fans who fiercely follow ALL the films and ALL the series, and those who just want to dip a head from time to time. in the MCU. A paradigm shift in the form of a puzzle, for the firm as well as for the spectators.

What will be the next Marvel series on Disney+ after Moon Knight?
